WASHINGTON -- A New Jersey businesswoman was arrested Monday on a perjury charge for allegedly denying knowledge of document-shredding in the ongoing government investigation of campaign finance abuses.
The Justice Department announced Audrey Yu of Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, was taken into custody following an indictment on charges she lied to a federal grand jury investigating campaign finance law violations.
Following an initial appearance in federal court in Newark, Yu was released on $50,000 bond. She will be arraigned next Monday.
Yu is the fifth person charged in New Jersey, and the 21st person charged overall in the Campaign Financing Task Force probe of political fund-raising abuses in the 1996 election cycle.
The investigation in New Jersey has focused on attempts to conceal campaign contributions that exceed legal limits.
The indictment comes less than a week after a New Jersey attorney pleaded guilty to making illegal campaign contributions to Sen. Robert Torricelli's successful 1996 Senate bid.
Torricelli, a New Jersey Democrat, has denied knowledge of any illegal contributions.
