SAN FRANCISCO (CNN) -- Early runoff-election results show
incumbent San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown with more than a
2-1 lead against rival Tom Ammiano, the San Francisco
Department of Elections said late Tuesday. Both men are
Democrats.
With nearly 60,000 absentee ballots counted, Brown had 41,504
votes, compared to Ammiano's 18,250.
Election officials said Brown, former California Assembly
speaker, was doing extremely well in the more affluent
neighborhoods, including Pacific Heights and the Marina
District.
If he wins, he will be the city's first mayor in 16 years to
be re-elected. He won 39 percent of the vote in the November
2 general election.
Ammiano, president of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors,
entered the mayor's race as a write-in candidate only 20 days
before the election. If elected, Ammiano would be the city's
first openly gay mayor and one dedicated to liberal causes.
Officials estimate there was an election turnout Tuesday of
nearly 200,000 voters. Polls closed at 8 p.m. (11 p.m. EST).
San Francisco Bureau Chief Greg Lefevre contributed to this
report.
