Des Moines Register: Campaign cash -- Who gets what, and from whom?By JOHN McCORMICK -- Register Staff Writer

His knowledge of foreign affairs has been questioned, but no one doubts Texas Gov. George W. Bush's ability to raise money.
The Republican presidential front-runner raised more than $57 million
during the first nine months of 1999 and could top $100 million by next
summer.
As voters prepare for the Jan. 24 Iowa caucuses, they may want to know
where Bush and other candidates are getting the millions it takes to
finance the race for the presidency.
Bush, for example, has attracted great generosity from his home state of
Texas, which has already yielded $12.3 million, or about 21 percent of
his total.
Employees and political action committees connected to the oil and gas
industry have contributed at least $1.1 million to Bush, according to the
Center for Responsive Politics, a nonpartisan, nonprofit research group
in Washington, D.C.
Campaign finance disclosure reports, however, don't tell the entire story.
The documents do not include money spent by independent groups that
often helps a candidate by turning out voters advocating a particular
position.
With that proviso, here's a look at some measures of presidential
fund-raising.

George W. Bush - Raised: $57.1 million Spent: $18.9 million
