LOS ANGELES (CNN) - The major United States airlines and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have assured people that it should be perfectly safe to take commercial flights on and around New Year's Day. But what about the smaller aircraft that make up general aviation in the country?

CNN Correspondent Charles Feldman contributed to this report.
