(CNN) -- Seattle's had a rough month. First, there were the violent protests against the World Trade Organization.

Then came the arrest along the U.S.-Canadian border of a man accused of attempting to smuggle bomb-making materials from Canada into Washington state.

Concerned about public safety, the mayor canceled the city's major New Year's Eve party. It's all part of growing up, of becoming a big city, says a city council member..
