From State Department Correspondent Andrea Koppel

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The State Department says the U.S. Embassy in Quito and U.S. Consulate in Guayaquil, Ecuador, were closed indefinitely at noon Friday due to "security threats" to American facilities in Ecuador.

A State Department official said that despite the fact that U.S. facilities are already on a heightened state of alert -- due to "specific threats to U.S. missions" -- the decision was made to close these facilities "indefinitely."

The official says he could not elaborate on the source of the threats.
