![]() 'Waiting' author describes busy life after National Book Awards
December 24, 1999 (CNN) -- Ha Jin was "humbled" when his work "Waiting" won best fiction at the National Book Awards in November. "I am deeply humbled and honored," the author said upon winning the award. "I think I also wish to thank America, a land of generosity. I thank the English language, that has provided me with a niche where I can do meaningful work." The Chinese immigrant has been pulling in the crowds at his public appearances and book signings. His novel, written in English, is enjoying a success he feared it would never have. Living outside of Atlanta with his wife and 16-year-old son, he is adjusting to a busy lifestyle as a noted author and English professor at Emory University.
