WASHINGTON (CNN) - Although it is still early in the 2000 presidential campaign, the tax cut debate among the Republican presidential candidates is heating up quickly.
Arizona Sen. John McCain, who released his five-year, $240 billion tax plan Tuesday, says front-runner George W. Bush's tax cut is aimed at the rich and will deplete the federal budget surplus. Armed with his own $483 billion plan, Bush maintains that McCain's tax plan is so small it won't end up helping the poor or saving Social Security, both objectives of the Arizona senator.
As the candidates campaign in New Hampshire and South Carolina -- trading barbs via the media -- CNN's Candy Crowley takes a look at the politics and the policy behind the tax debate.
