DES MOINES, IOWA (CNN) -- Republican George W. Bush and
Democrat Al Gore hold commanding leads in the Hawkeye State,
two days before their parties' presidential caucuses here, a
new Iowa Poll for the Des Moines Register shows.
Bush claimed the support of 43 percent of the likely GOP
caucus-goers. His main competitor in Iowa, Steve Forbes, had
20 percent. That represents a gain of 2 percentage points for
Forbes -- and a 2-point loss for Bush since the last Iowa
Poll in early January.
John McCain, who is not campaigning in Iowa, and Alan Keyes
are tied for third place with 8 percent each. Gary Bauer had
6 percent; Orrin Hatch, 1 percent.
In the Democratic race, Gore leads Bill Bradley 56 percent to
28 percent among likely Democratic caucus-goers in Iowa. Gore
led Bradley 54 percent to 33 percent in the previous Iowa
Poll.
The survey released today was taken January 16-21. The
sampling error is plus or minus 4 percentage points.
