WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Former New Jersey Sen. Bill Bradley trails Vice President Al
Gore by five points among likely Democratic primary voters in New Hampshire,
while Arizona Sen. John McCain has a wider 43%-34% margin over Texas Gov. George W. Bush among likely GOP primary participants, according to the latest CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll.
One reason for McCain's lead: he has a huge lead among moderates while losing conservatives by a smaller margin. McCain's strength is also based on a strong showing among college educated voters,
although he loses to Bush among voters who never attended college. The Democrats also have a "college gap", with Bradley winning college graduates and Gore leading among voters with no college degree.
But the biggest gap for the Democrats is still the gender gap. Bradley has a thin lead among men but loses women to Gore by a wider margin. McCain is also better-liked than Bush among
GOP voters, while Gore and Bradley have equally high favorable ratings among
Granite State Democratic primary voters.
The poll is based on interviews with 487 likely Democratic primary voters and 620 likely Republican
primary voters. It was conducted January 21-23.
