WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The results of the New Hampshire primary have had a mild effect on the Republican presidential race and a noticeable effect in the Democratic contest, according to a new poll conducted by CNN and Time.
On the Democratic side, Al Gore has padded his lead over Bill Bradley by 13 points, largely by wooing undecided voters and convincing Democrats that he is a strong leader and a winner. Gore has grown more popular with Democrats since January, while Bradley's favorable rating has stalled.
CNN and Time, which conducted the poll after the New Hampshire primary, interviewed 1,257 adult Americans -- including 1,005 registered voters. Of those, 444 were registered Democrats and 395 were registered Republicans. The survey was conducted on February 2 and 3.
In the GOP race, McCain has shaved a few points from George W. Bush's lead, but Bush still has a comfortable 54 percent to 28 percent lead among registered Republicans nationwide.
There is little change in the general election match-ups, with Gore still losing to Bush and still tied with McCain.
What effect does a win in New Hampshire have on the victorious candidates? The number of registered Democrats who think Gore can beat the GOP nominee in November has zoomed from 54 percent in January to 67 percent today, (while the number who think Bradley can win has dropped 15 points).
More Democrats also think that Gore is inspiring and a strong leader, while
Bradley's numbers on those characteristics have dropped.
McCain's New Hampshire victory has had a similar effect on registered Republicans. For the first time, a majority of Republicans nationwide believe that McCain can win in November, and the number of registered GOP voters who find him inspiring and a strong and decisive leader has also increased.
The bottom line: McCain's favorable rating has grown by 13 points, but Bush is still better known and better-liked by GOP voters nationwide.
Hillary Clinton running for Senate
A majority of Americans say that Hillary Rodham Clinton should run for the U.S. Senate from New York, and they will see that happen on Sunday afternoon when Clinton officially throws her hat into the ring.
Would Americans vote for her if she were running for Senate in their state? 29 percent say they would definitely vote for her and another 28 percent would consider doing so. But four in 10 say they would definitely not vote for her.
