WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Both Republican and Democratic presidential candidates have so far avoided outright assaults in the television "air wars" of the 2000 campaign.

But as Howard Kurtz of CNN's Reliable Sources reports, the campaigns have found ways to bash their opponents by somewhat gentler means.
