Video: Bush's real firewall
February 24, 2000
Web posted at: 6:18 p.m. EST (2318 GMT)
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A good number of states have been described as a "firewall" for the unexpectedly 'up-and-down' GOP presidential campaign of Texas Gov. George W. Bush.
For example -- South Carolina, whose Republicans voted last Saturday, has long been considered a firewall for candidates anointed by the GOP establishment who may have been disappointed in the New Hampshire primary -- as Bush certainly was. Bush, of course, won South Carolina.
This year, Michigan Republican Gov. John Engler described his state as a "firewall" for Bush to fall back on in his intense struggle with Arizona Sen. John McCain. Engler's metaphor collapsed Tuesday night, when McCain left the Wolverine State with a victory.
But Bush has an ace up his sleeve -- the multi-state primary across the South that is set for March 14. CNN's Jeff Greenfield takes a look at this key primary voting day, in a piece that first aired on CNN and Time's "NewsStand."
