WASHINGTON (CNN) -- When is the last time a running mate actually made a difference in the outcome of a presidential election? Not since 1960, when John Kennedy of Massachusetts selected Lyndon Johnson from Texas to round out the Democratic ticket.
But Election 2000 is shaping up to be a close contest between GOP Texas Gov. George W. Bush and Democratic Vice President Al Gore, with each candidate gearing up for hand-to-hand combat in nearly every corner of disputed territory.
CNN Senior Political Analyst Bill Schneider takes a look at why this year, geography matters.
