LOS ANGELES (CNN) --Although Texas Gov. George W. Bush rode the rails in California for a few days after this year's Republican convention, and Vice President Al Gore plans a steamboat trip down the Mississippi after this year's Democratic gathering, both ventures are largely symbolic gestures in terms of meeting large numbers of American voters.
More than 50 years after Harry Truman rode the rails en route to his surprising 1948 election win, CNN's Bruce Morton looks at how presidential campaigns have evolved from whistle-stops to sound bites.
