McAuliffe says Gore 'in good spirits'

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Democratic fundraiser Terry McAuliffe said Thursday Vice President Al Gore is "in good spirits" a day after conceding the presidential election.

McAuliffe spoke to CNN outside a White House dinner for the Special Olympics. He had just seen Gore at a party at the Naval Observatory, the vice president's official residence.

McAuliffe also had some words for the President-elect George W. Bush.

"I wish the new president well, and I hope he fights for those issues which are important to Democrats, (like) affirmative action and choice and environment, and keeps this robust economy going. If he can continue on all those paths, then it will be a good bipartisan relationship," he said.

But McAuliffe expressed some lingering doubts about the outcome of the election.

"We won the popular vote, I think there's a question about the electoral college and the Supreme Court ruled the way they did," he said. "We've got to get past this election, we've got to move on, the whole country has to get together."
