| Kazakh president sacks long-serving first deputy prime minister
ALMATY, Kazakhstan (Reuters) -- Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev has sacked Alexander Pavlov, first deputy prime minister since September 1996 and the longest serving member of the government, the president's office said on Thursday. Pavlov, 47, was finance minister from 1994 to 1998. He served as first deputy to three prime ministers, including Akezhan Kazhegeldin, who later fell out with Nazarbayev and has been living in exile since 1998. Nazarbayev's office said Pavlov was leaving his post in connection with his transfer to another job, a common euphemism for dismissal. Copyright 2000 Reuters. All rights reserved.
