| Five Kashmiri schoolchildren killed by shelling
CHOTALI, Pakistan (CNN) -- Pakistani shelling killed six people, five of them schoolchildren, when a rocket landed on a primary school in Indian-controlled Kashmir on Wednesday, according to Indian police. "Due to heavy mortar/rocket shelling on civilian population from across the border, today (Wednesday) five schoolchildren and one civilian were killed when a rocket hit the Government Middle school building in Chotali Uri sector," a statement said. Four people were injured, officials said, and taken to a hospital.
The school is about 110 kilometers (68 miles) from Kashmir's largest city, Srinigar. Since gaining independence from Britain in 1947, India has fought three wars against Pakistan -- two over disputed Kashmir. Pakistan said eight people had been killed by Indian artillery attacks on the Pakistani side of the Line of Control dividing the sections of Kashmir held by the nuclear neighbors. Tensions between the two -- and casualties -- were steadily rising as the armies on both sides of the demarcation line were under orders to shoot to kill if troops from the opposite side were encountered.RELATED STORIES: Commonwealth expresses concern about Pakistan RELATED SITES: CIA World Factbook: India | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
