| Six killed by Indian shelling in Kashmir
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (Reuters) -- At least six people were killed and six wounded by Indian shelling in the divided Himalayan territory of Kashmir, Pakistan's official APP news agency said on Sunday. It said Indian troops directed artillery and mortar fire across the military control line into Pakistan-controlled Kashmir. The news agency quoted a state official in the area as saying five of those killed on Saturday night in different parts of the territory were women.
Worst-hit was the Kail area in the Neelum valley, where Indian troops fired 250 artillery and mortar shells, killing five people, APP said. Arch-rivals India and Pakistan often accuse each other of cross-border firing in the region. India, which controls about 45 percent of Kashmir -- its only Muslem-majority state -- is fighting a decade-old separatist revolt. Pakistan, which denies Indian charges of training and arming the militants, controls just over a third of the territory. The remainder is held by China. Copyright 2000 Reuters. All rights reserved.
