November 26, 2000
Web posted at: 8:54 AM HKT (0054 GMT)

DHAKA, Bangladesh (Reuters) -- At least 37 people, mostly women, were killed and many others injured when fire swept through a four-storey garment factory near the Bangladesh capital on Saturday night, fire fighters said.

They said most victims at the Chowdhury Knitwear Factory at Narsingdi, 60 kilometers (40 miles) from Dhaka, were women workers.

The main gate at the factory was locked from the outside when the fire broke out, one fireman said early on Sunday.

No other details were immediately available.
