JAKARTA, Indonesia (CNN) -- As violence swept
Indonesia last year, TIME photographer John Stanmeyer
was in the frontline recording the mayhem that
resulted in a new president for the country.
His images of violence in Jakarta and on the streets
of East Timor were flashed around the world and he put
his life on the line to get close to the action.
This month, Stanmeyer was rewarded. He took out first
and third place in the spot news category of the
prestigious World Press Photo awards.
One of the winning images, that of a man murdered in
East Timor, made the front cover of TIME Asia.
