| Thai floods kill 47, cause at least $51 million damage
BANGKOK, Thailand (Reuters) -- Floods in Thailand over the past few weeks have killed 47 people and caused at least 2.18 billion baht ($51.05 million) in damage to property and farmland, the country's national rescue center said on Monday. Three tropical storms have hit 43 of 76 provinces in Thailand's northern, northeastern and central regions in the past five weeks, affecting more than 2.5 million people, the center said in a statement. Rivers and reservoirs have now returned to normal in 17 Thai provinces but heavy rains are expected in northeastern and southern Thailand over the next week, the center said. Thailand has been affected less severely than some of its neighbors by flooding, which often occurs across Indochina during the June-October monsoon season. Cambodian floods have killed at least 137 people this year, while the worst floods in decades in Vietnam's Mekong Delta have left at least 75 dead, mainly children. Copyright 2000 Reuters.
