Well-known Italian sausage back on U.S. shelvesJanuary 19, 2000 From wire reports ROME -- If you thought the best thing to come out of Italy was mozzarella, maybe you should try the Mortadella. A 20-year import ban on the famous Italian sausage has just been lifted and Americans should find it in grocery stores by next month. The sausage, made of pork, beef and finely chopped pork fat, is seasoned with garlic and pepper. Originally from the city of Bologna, it is one of better known Italian meats. With support from the Italian health ministry, Assica -- Italy's meat industry association -- has been behind a long-time lobbying effort to change U.S. policy. The ban was originally put in place by the United States over health concerns. RELATED STORIES: Phooey on fat: Americans love a good hot dog RELATED SITES: Italy: National Institute of Health
