'Civil debate' expected from new USDA committee on biotech in agricultureJanuary 21, 2000 WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman named 38 members to a new advisory committee on Agricultural Biotechnology Friday to foster a civil debate over the uses of biotechnology on farms and ranches in the United States The new USDA committee will advise the Secretary on policy related to the creation, application, marketability, trade and use of agricultural biotechnology. It's members include organic farmers, consumer advocates and executives from the some of nation's largest chemical companies. "It is my hope that this group, which brings together people with a range of perspectives and experiences, will engage in the kind of thoughtful and civil debate on biotechnology that our country now needs," Glickman said in a statement. Dennis Eckart, former Congressman from Ohio, will chair the committee, which is authorized to meet for two years to advise the USDA on public policy.
