Britannia also rules in tasty restaurant fareLONDON (CNN) -- London is a city that revels in the past. Centuries are measured in its streets, from remnants of the Roman Empire to a modern recreation of Shakespeare's Globe. But when it comes to Epicurean tastes, England's history hasn't been exactly, shall we say, sterling. Now, deliciously, times have changed. "Actually, there's some of the best food I think you're going to find in the world right now happening in London, which is a big change probably from 20 years ago," says a Connecticut patron of the fabulous St. John, where the British tradition of roasted meats is more than well done.
From tiny game birds to whole suckling pigs and tender pheasant, the chefs at St. John know how to plan menus fit for a feast. At legendary gilded grocery Fortnum & Mason, Martin Guthrie helps tourists and regular shoppers (members of the royal family included) to find gourmet treats. "We were started in 1707 by two footmen from Buckingham Palace," he says. "They started selling candles on the corner outside our store, and we have been trading on this site ever since." Gorgeous cheeses, fine teas and more than 50 varieties of honey are found on Fortnum & Mason's elegant shelves. How edibly delightful.
