Slim-Fast recalls popular diet drink

WEST PALM BEACH, Florida (CNN) -- The Slim-Fast Foods company voluntarily recalled more than a million cans of its popular diet drink Thursday, after receiving hundreds of complaints from consumers. Most called to complain of an "off taste," but five people reported being ill, according to a company spokesman.

A company consumer hotline said the recall on 11-ounce cans of Slim-Fast's Creamy Milk Chocolate, Cappuccino Delight and Strawberries and Cream flavors was issued because "they may present a low risk of temporary sickness." It advised consumers to return the beverages to the store where they were purchased for a full refund.

A company spokesman told CNN a manufacturing problem affected the "integrity" of the beverages. He said illnesses have ranged from vomiting to diarrhea but he called the risk of serious illness "remote."

A spokeswoman for the Food and Drug Administration told CNN a draft press release from Slim-Fast reported the cause of the "manufacturing problem" had been investigated and corrected.
