Mother, son convicted of murdering New York millionaire

The mother and son crime team of Sante and Kenneth Kimes are found guilty in the murder of Irene Silverman and will face life in prison at their June sentencing

NEW YORK (CNN) -- A New York jury didn't need a body to convict a mother and son in the murder of a Manhattan millionaire.

Sante Kimes and her son, Kenneth Kimes, were convicted Thursday of killing Irene Silverman, 82, in an attempt to steal her nearly $10 million townhouse on the Upper East Side. Silverman's body was never found.

They were found guilty of 118 offenses -- 58 convictions for Sante Kimes and 60 for Kenneth Kimes -- including second-degree murder, conspiracy, robbery and possession of stolen property. The two face prison terms of up to 100 years each.

The Kimeses came to the attention of the police in July 1998 after police arrested them on a stolen car warrant. The 1997 Lincoln Town Car they were driving had been purchased with a bad $14,900 check.

Inside the car, police discovered several of Silverman's documents, a loaded 9 mm handgun, .22 caliber pistols, $30,000 in cash and several disguises. They also found cassette recordings of Silverman's telephone conversations and a forged deed that transferred her townhouse to the Kimeses.

Silverman was last reported seen in July 1998.
