CNN's Charles Feldman reports on the LAPD corruption scandal
(CNN) -- Five months ago, Rafael Perez, the officer at the center of the Los Angeles Police Department corruption scandal, was sentenced to five years in prison for stealing cocaine from a police evidence locker. He received the lenient sentence because he agreed to cooperate with an investigation into criminal conduct by other members of the LAPD. Since then, three more officers have been charged with crimes ranging from filing false police reports to planting evidence to perjury. Seventy officers currently are under investigation for various offenses and 100 convictions have been overturned. The U.S. Justice Department says it is prepared to file a civil rights lawsuit against the LAPD, unless Los Angeles city officials agree to mandated changes in the department. How did the LAPD get into this mess? Some say it is the dark side of the war on drugs. City and civic leaders discuss the origins of the problem and how to remedy it. CNN's Charles Feldman reports.
