Bailey's career highlights1961 -- Bailey took over the defense of Dr. Sam Sheppard, an Ohio doctor convicted of murdering his wife. The case inspired the TV series "The Fugitive." Bailey won Sheppard's release from prison in 1964 and his acquittal in a 1966 retrial. 1967 -- Bailey defended confessed "Boston Strangler" Albert DeSalvo. DeSalvo admitted killing 13 women in Boston in the 1960s, but was never tried on the charges. He was sentenced to life in prison on unrelated sex offenses, assault and robbery charges. DeSalvo was stabbed to death in prison in 1973. 1971 -- Bailey won an acquittal for Ernest Medina, a soldier who was tried for his role in the My Lai massacre during the Vietnam War. 1976 -- Bailey unsuccessfully defended newspaper heiress Patty Hearst who was kidnapped by the Symbionese Liberation Army and took part in several bank robberies. She was convicted of bank robbery and felonious use of firearms and sentenced to seven years in prison. 1994 -- Bailey joined the criminal defense team of football star O.J. Simpson prior to the start of pre-trial hearings. Simpson was charged with murdering his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman. Simpson was acquitted in October 1995.
