Reputed bosses of New Jersey crime family indicted
NEW YORK (CNN) -- Twelve reputed mobsters from New Jersey's Decavalcante Mafia family, including several of its leaders, have been arrested on racketeering charges involving murders, loan-sharking and securities fraud, federal authorities said Thursday. The office of U.S. Attorney Mary Jo White said the arrests wipe out "virtually the entire ruling hierarchy of the Decavalcante organized crime family of La Cosa Nostra." One FBI source said the family is now "leaderless." Those indicted and arrested included Girolamo aka "James" Palermo and Charles Majuri, two of the Decavalcante's alleged acting crime bosses, who have been running the family business, according to an FBI source, since December. Charges include racketeering, and other charges relating to five murders, conspiracies to murder eight people, securities fraud, loan sharking, gambling and extortion. In December, the alleged head of the family, John Riggi, was indicted along with reputed underboss Vincent Palermo on numerous RICO charges including murder, conspiracy to commit murder, loan- sharking and extortion. Riggi has been in prison since 1990 but the indictment alleges he has been running the mob from behind bars.
