'Puff Daddy' trial set for January
NEW YORK (Reuters) -- A Manhattan Supreme Court judge set January 2 as the start date for the trial of rap star Sean "Puffy" Combs on charges of gun possession and bribery stemming from a shooting at a Manhattan nightclub. Judge Charles Solomon said Thursday that Combs' bodyguard, Anthony "Wolf" Jones and Jamal "Shyne" Barrow, his co-defendants, will be tried with him. The trial was expected to take several weeks once a jury is selected, Combs lawyer Benjamin Brafman said. All three have pleaded not guilty. Combs, also known as Puff Daddy, and his two co-defendants are charged with criminal possession of a 9 mm handgun allegedly found on the floor of his vehicle December 27, 1999.
The weapon was found after Combs and his girlfriend, actress-singer Jennifer Lopez, left a night club after an early morning fracas in which three people were injured, one of them a woman who was shot in the face. Barrow has also been charged with attempted murder, assault and reckless endangerment. Copyright 2000 Reuters. All rights reserved.
