(CNN) -- "The Sixth Sense," "American Beauty" and "The Green Mile" captured nominations in the top categories Tuesday morning from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Dustin Hoffman joined Academy president Robert Rehme in Beverly Hills to announce the nominees for best actors, directors, screenwriters and best film of 1999.

Among "American Beauty's" nominations were best picture; Annette Bening for best actress; Kevin Spacey for best actor; Alan Ball for best screenplay; and best director for Sam Mendes.

  ALSO

"The Sixth Sense" got nominations including best picture, directing, screenplay and supporting actor (Haley Joel Osment).

"The Cider House Rules," "The Green Mile" and "The Insider" also won best picture nominations.

Nominees in most of the 23 categories were chosen by specific branches of the Academy's 5,300 members, such as actors, directors and film editors. Some nominations, including those for best documentary and non-English-language film, were selected by special screening committees, while all Academy members were allowed to cast votes for best-picture nominees.

The full Academy membership is eligible to vote in all categories for the awards themselves.

The Oscars will be presented March 26 from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. ABC is to broadcast the awards.

Billy Crystal, who has been emcee for six past Oscar shows, will return as host after turning the job over to Whoopi Goldberg last year.

Actor, director and producer Warren Beatty will receive the Academy's Irving G. Thalberg award, which is presented to producers whose work represents a "consistently high quality of motion picture production."
