Bob Hope hospitalized in stable condition

RANCHO MIRAGE, California (CNN) -- Comedian Bob Hope was admitted to Eisenhower Medical Center Thursday for treatment of a lower intestinal condition, his publicist said. He was described in stable condition.

The 97-year-old entertainer has been in declining health for several years.

Hope's 91-year-old wife, Dolores, and daughter, Linda, accompanied him to the hospital.

Ward Grant, Hope's publicist, said Hope went to the hospital by ambulance after complaining of lower intestinal problems. He was taken from a Palm Springs hospital to Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, California, for additional care.

Grant said the illness was treatable and was not life- threatening.

"He will remain in intensive care overnight and then be moved out of intensive care for another week," Grant said. "The doctors, Dolores and Linda are very optimistic."

The Hopes had just returned home Tuesday from a three-week visit on the East coast where they participated in the opening of the Bob Hope Gallery of American Entertainment at the Library of Congress and celebrated their birthdays at a friend's house in Maryland.

In addition to his film and television work, Hope toured tirelessly for the United States Armed Forces in his heyday. He has received countless honorary degrees and awards -- everything from the Medal of Freedom to Comedian of the Century -- and has published a dozen books.
