Bob Hope released from hospital

Bob Hope released from hospital

RANCHO MIRAGE, California (CNN) -- Bob Hope was released from the hospital Wednesday nearly a week after being hospitalized for gastrointestinal bleeding.

Hope was released from the Eisenhower Regional Medical Center at 5 p.m. PDT, shortly after a brief appearance in a wheelchair on an atrium, said hospital spokeswoman Lea Goodsell.

"Medically, nothing could be done at the hospital that couldn't be done at home," Goodsell said of Hope's release.

According Hope's publicist Ward Grant, the legendary actor told his wife after the appearance on the atrium, "As long as I'm dressed, let's go home."

Hope had rolled on to a third floor hospital atrium in a wheelchair, assisted by his wife Dolores, Dr. Gary Annunziata, his nurse and his personal assistant, J. Paulin. The comedian was helped to his feet and waved briefly to hospital onlookers.

Hope also posed for photographs, wearing a blue baseball hat and a white-and-yellow golf shirt.

Hope will be put back on his regular medicines and begin physical therapy to regain strength in his arms and upper body.

The comedian was admitted to the hospital last Thursday for gastrointestinal discomfort and bleeding.

Doctors have asked the Hopes to remain in the area for another week before they return to their Los Angeles home
