RANCHO MIRAGE, California (CNN) -- Doctors have asked Bob Hope and his wife to remain in the Rancho Mirage, California, area for a week before returning to their Los Angeles home, after the actor was released from the hospital on Wednesday evening.

Hope, 97, was released from the Eisenhower Regional Medical Center at 5 p.m., said Lea Goodsell, a hospital spokeswoman.

"Medically nothing could be done at the hospital that couldn't be done at home," Goodsell said.

According to Ward Grant, the publicist for Hope, the actor made a brief appearance in a wheelchair in an atrium at the hospital. Afterward, he told his wife, Dolores, "As long as I'm dressed, let's go home."

He appeared on the atrium with his wife Dolores, Dr. Gary Annunziata, his nurse and his personal assistant, J. Paulin.

The comedian was helped to his feet and waved briefly to hospital onlookers. He also posed for photographs, wearing a blue baseball hat and a white and yellow golf shirt.

Hope will take his regular medicines and engage in physical therapy to regain strength in his arms and upper body.

He had been admitted to the hospital last Thursday for gastrointestinal discomfort and bleeding.
