Jones and Douglas wed in style

NEW YORK -- Hundreds of fans crowded the streets outside New York's Plaza Hotel on Saturday night for what was dubbed the showbusiness wedding of the year between actors Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones.

An array of celebrity guests flocked to the five star hotel in Manhattan for a lavish ceremony said to have cost the couple $2 million.

Hollywood actors Danny DeVito, James Woods and Goldie Hawn and director Oliver Stone joined the Jones family, who flew in from Swansea, South Wales, for the occasion.

They included Jones' octogenarian grandmother Zeta, whose name the actress adopted. There had been fears she might not make it because of a hip operation, but she was given the all-clear to travel.

The couple's three-month old son, Dylan, was also at the nuptials and the groom's 23-year-old son Cameron took on the role of best man, while British television presenter Anna Walker was maid of honour.

Douglas' official website described the ceremony as "beautiful" and said the bride looked stunning in an ivory Duchess satin gown with a long, antique Chantilly lace train by designer Christian LaCroix. The bridesmaids and mother-of-the-bride also wore outfits by LaCroix.

The relationship between Douglas, 56, and Jones, 31, has provided rich fodder for the tabloids on both sides of the Atlantic, and that increased with news that the couple had agreed to sign a complex pre-nuptial agreement.

The son of screen legend Kirk, Michael Douglas took his first steps to stardom in 1972 appearing opposite Karl Malden in the police show The Streets of San Francisco -- when Zeta Jones was just a toddler.

The star of Basic Instinct and The Jewel of The Nile won an Oscar for producing One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest in 1976, and a second Academy Award for his portrayal of Gordon Gekko in Wall Street.

Jones came to attention in the British TV hit series The Darling Buds Of May in 1991, later having a string of celebrity boyfriends including Braveheart actor Angus McFadyen and singer Mick Hucknall.

Her big movie break came in 1998 with The Mask Of Zorro, a massive hit in the U.S., as was her next appearance, in the adventure film Entrapment with Sean Connery.

The couple began dating in the spring of 1999 and became engaged last New Year's Eve. Zeta-Jones gave birth to their son, Dylan Michael, in August.
