Forty-six countries submit films for Oscars
HOLLYWOOD, California (Reuters) -- A record 46 countries -- including first-time contender Ecuador -- have submitted pictures to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences for Academy Award consideration in the foreign-language category. This year's submissions include: Algeria, "Little Senegal"; Argentina, "Felicidades"; Austria, "The Stranger"; Belgium, "Everybody Famous"; Brazil, "Me, You, Them"; Bulgaria, "Letter to America"; Canada, "Maelstrom"; Chile, "Coronation"; China, "Breaking the Silence"; Croatia, "Marshall Tito's Spirit"; Czech Republic, "Divided We Fall"; Denmark, "A Place Nearby"; Ecuador, "Dreams From the Middle of the World"; Finland, "Seven Songs From the Tundra"; France, "The Taste of Others"; and Georgia, "27 Missing Kisses." Others are: Germany, "No Place to Go"; Greece, "Peppermint"; Hong Kong, "In the Mood for Love"; Hungary, "Glamour"; Iceland, "Angels of the Universe"; India, "Hey Ram"; Iran, "A Time for Drunken Horses"; Israel, "Time of Favor"; Italy, "The Hundred Steps"; Japan, "When the Rain Lifts"; Korea, "Chunhyang"; Mexico, "Love's a Bitch"; Morocco, "Ali Zaoua"; Nepal, "Mask of Desire"; Netherlands, "Little Crumb"; and Norway, "Odd Little Man." The Philippines offers "Anak"; Poland, "Life as a Fatal Sexually Transmitted Disease"; Portugal, "Too Late"; Russia, "His Wife's Diary"; Slovak Republic, "Landscape"; Spain, "You're the One (A Tale From Then)"; Sweden, "Songs From the Second Floor"; Switzerland, "Gripsholm"; Taiwan, "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon"; Thailand, "6ixty-Nin9"; Turkey, "Run for Money"; Venezuela, "Devil Gold"; Vietnam, "Vertical Ray of the Sun"; and, finally, Yugoslavia, "Sky Hook." The foreign-language film award committee, chaired by producer Mark Johnson, will screen all entries, beginning December 1, before voting to nominate five pictures. Films submitted for consideration may also qualify for kudos in most other categories, provided they meet the requirements governing those categories.
