'Quills' takes home award season's first prize

"Quills"

NEW YORK -- The movie awards season has officially begun. "Quills," Philip Kaufman's drama about the Marquis de Sade, Wednesday was named the best film of the year by the National Board of Review.

The board's choice of "Quills" seems fitting; the organization was founded in 1909 to fight censorship of the film industry. The marquis, played by Geoffrey Rush, spent the last years of his life in an insane asylum, banished for his controversial writings. The film, which focuses on the marquis' last days, also Kate Winslet, Michael Caine and Joaquin Phoenix.

Spanish actor Javier Bardem was named best actor for his role in "Before Night Falls," about the Cuban writer and poet Reinaldo Arenas. Julia Roberts won the best actress prize for "Erin Brockovich," based on the real-life environmental crusader.
