BEVERLY HILLS, California (CNN) -- Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, Mel Gibson, Juliette Binoche and a host of other stars were nominated early Thursday for Golden Globe Awards, recognizing the year's dramatic, musical and comic productions on film and TV.

Actors Kelsey Grammer, Lara Flynn Boyle and Christine Lahti announced the nominees, selected by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, in a brief ceremony that began about 8:15 a.m. EST. Winners will be named January 21.

Perennial favorite Hanks was nominated for outstanding lead actor for his role as a marooned man struggling against the elements and isolation in "Cast Away." Roberts, who played a divorced mom struggling to right a monumental environmental wrong in "Erin Brockovich," was nominated for best lead actress.

Binoche, whose character could do wondrous things with chocolate in "Chocolat," was nominated as best actress in a comedy or musical film. Gibson, who played an advertising executive suddenly endowed with the ability to hear women think, got a nod for best actor in a comedy or musical for "What Women Want."

Robert Downey Jr., whose off-screen struggles with drugs belie his on-screen success, was nominated for best supporting actor in a series, miniseries or made-for-TV film for his recurring role in "Ally McBeal."

Others, ranging from "Grinch"-man Jim Carrey to 'Dark Angel" Jessica Alba, were nominated in categories ranging from best actor in a comedy or musical film to best actress in a televised drama.

"Billy Elliott," about a boy who chooses ballet over boxing, led a list of films nominated as outstanding dramas. "Best in Show," a film detailing some of the antics behind a dog show, topped a list of comedy nominees.

Powerhouse series "The West Wing," "E.R." and "The Practice" were among the nominees for best TV drama. "Ally McBeal," "Sex and the City" and "Malcom in the Middle" were among the comedy nominees.

Hollywood anticipated the announcements, said Lahti, who also was nominated as best actress in a TV miniseries or film for her role in "An American Daughter."

"It's like a birthday," she said.
