(CNN) -- With the Golden Globe winners behind us and the Academy Awards around the corner, some musicians may be prepared to argue that the award for best supporting role in a movie should go to the score.

Knowing that music can make or break a cinematic experience, filmmakers carefully select their composers. The outstanding ones are to receive their due on February 15, when the Oscar committee is scheduled to name the contenders for best original score at this year's Academy Awards.
