A CNN WorldBeat report

(CNN) -- For 12 years, Santana's first Grammy has been sitting on the proverbial mantel, all by its lonesome. Now it's got eight others to keep it company.

The 52-year-old guitar slinger dominated the ceremonies Wednesday, thanks to his album "Supernatural" and its single "Smooth." He won awards for best record, best album, best pop duo/group with vocals, best pop collaboration with vocals, best pop instrumental performance, best rock duo/group with vocals, best rock instrumental performance and best rock album.

His success should be an inspiration to others, Santana told the audience.

"If I can do it, people from the ghettos, the barrio, the shanty towns can do it," the Mexican-born Santana said. "I know, because I came from there."

CNN's WorldBeat spoke with Santana, pre-Grammys.
