Ghoulishly tasteful, stylishly horrible

(CNN) - Apparently there are scarier things in Martha Stewart's kitchen than overdone lamb chops.

Fresh, and just in time for this ghoulish holiday, comes "Martha Stewart Living: Spooky Scary Sounds for Halloween." No perfect Hallow's Eve is complete without it.

"Martha Stewart Living: Spooky Scary Sounds for Halloween" is a 40-minute collection of, well, spooky, scary sounds -- creaking doors, yowling cats, whipping winds. The collection's sound designer, Robert Montrone, did a nice job of creating a soundtrack that doesn't sound cliched or redundant.

In the proper setting -- not a raucous costume party, where music should be the rule -- the album could add the right amount of ambiance without being overbearing.

Naturally, this release wouldn't be complete if the head hostess herself didn't offer a little something extra to her guests -- er, customers. In the "Martha Stewart Living: Spooky Scary Sounds for Halloween" booklet, the social engineer offers tips for a pumpkin-carving party, creating the perfect ghost-in-the-mirror effect and making perfect caramel apples.

OK, this collection doesn't have the camp factor of, say, "The Monster Mash," but it's not terrifyingly expensive ($9.98 for the CD, $5.99 for a cassette) and it is a fun accoutrement.

After all, what good is Halloween without the soundtrack?
