Santana up for six prizes at Billboard Music Awards
ATLANTA, Georgia -- Santana's face is pasted all over the Billboard Music Awards. His album "Supernatural" is carrying him into the ceremony with a whopping six nominations, the most of any artist. The awards show is scheduled to take place Tuesday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Fox plans to air the event live at 8 p.m. EST (and via tape delay at 8 p.m. PST). Santa's nominations include Hot 100 singles artist of the year; albums artist of the year; album of the year; and two nods for Hot 100 single of the year for both "Smooth" and "Maria Maria." He's competing against 'N Sync, Christina Aguilera and "Destiny's Child" for artist of the year. Faith Hill comes in second with five nominations, including female artist of the year. Following with four are Sisqo, creator of the "Thong Song," and 3 Doors Down. Eminem, Britney Spears, Aguilera and 'N Sync got three nominations each. Randy Newman is to receive the Century Award. He's the talent behind such hits as "Short People," "Mama Told Me Not To Come," and "You've Got a Friend" from the movie "Toy Story" (1996). 'N Sync is slated to host the show with "Suddenly Susan" star Kathy Griffin. The boy band is also on the list of featured performers, along with Hill, Creed, Ricky Martin, Destiny's Child, 3 Doors Down and Mystikal. The winners are not chosen based on artistic merit. Billboard picks them based on findings from year-end charts, which are determined by radio airplay and record sales. RELATED SITES: See related sites about MUSIC |
