Puente to receive posthumous Hero Award

NEW YORK -- The late "Mambo King" Tito Puente is expected to be honored posthumously with the 2000 Heroes Award for charity work on Tuesday.

The award, presented by the New York Chapter of the Recording Academy, also will go to blues legend B.B. King, record executive Frank Military, actress Bernadette Peters, producer Phil Ramone and singer Diana Ross.

Puente, who is being recognized for his work with educational foundations, died this spring at age 77 after undergoing heart surgery.

Armand Assante, who played a flamboyant Cuban musician in the movie "The Mambo Kings" (1992) has been tapped to present the award to Puente's family.
