Madonna gives rare live performance

In a rare live performance, Madonna sang at New York's Roseland on Sunday night

NEW YORK -- Hundreds of lucky fans were granted a live performance by the Material Girl at the Roseland dance club in Manhattan Sunday night.

"I'm so happy to be onstage again!" shouted Madonna, dressed in a black tank top and pants decorated with gold sequins.

The standing-room only crowd consisted of celebrities such as fashion designer Donatella Versace and fans who won free tickets from local radio stations. Madonna sang a handful of songs from her new album, including her recent No. 1 hit, "Music."

Madonna last performed at the club more than a decade ago, opening for the now-defunct teen group, New Edition.

She's expected to go on tour early next year. No specific dates or cities have been set.

Depp, Law to star in 'Marlowe'

LOS ANGELES, California -- Johnny Depp and Jude Law are set to go head to head as dueling playwrights in the film, "Marlowe."

The $22 million film will feature Depp as Elizabethan playwright Christopher Marlowe, who runs afoul of a jealous male admirer. His admirer eventually hands Marlowe's unpublished work to the then-unsuccessful scribe, William Shakespeare (Law) who passes off Marlowe's writings as his own.

British filmmaker John Maybury ("Love is the Devil") is set to direct.

Director Steven Spielberg honored

LOS ANGELES, California -- Britain's Prince Andrew crowned director Steven Spielberg with an award for excellence in film at a British film industry gala Saturday.

Spielberg was given the first Stanley Kubrick Award for excellence in film at the 10th annual BAFTA/LA Britannia Awards. Prince Andrew's appearance capped his three-day trip to Tinseltown aimed at expanding business and technology links between England and the United States.

Whoopi Goldberg served as emcee, and other celebrity attendees included Cate Blanchett, Holly Hunter and Pierce Brosnan.

Spielberg's films include "Jaws" (1975), "E.T." (1982), and "Schindler's List" (1993).
