NBC rookie shows on the rocks

"Titans," with Yasmine Bleeth and Casper Van Dien, gets the ax from NBC

HOLLYWOOD, California -- It's not a good season for rookie shows on the peacock network. NBC has axed Aaron Spelling's prime-time soap, "Titans," and "The Michael Richards Show" is a heartbeat away from the same fate.

NBC pulled the plug on "Titans" Tuesday, one day after it scored dismal ratings in its new 8 p.m. Monday time slot.

The fate of "The Michael Richards Show" rests on how well Tuesday's episode fared in the ratings. The show's troubled beginnings may have foreshadowed its future: NBC tossed the original pilot, brought in new characters and revamped the revised pilot.

Network insiders say unless the show makes a miracle comeback in Tuesday's ratings, it will be cancelled by the end of the week.

'Queer as Folk' scores big on cable TV

NEW YORK -- It looks like the $15 million Showtime spent to promote "Queer as Folk" paid off. The controversial new gay drama series scored the cable channel's best ratings in three years in its Sunday premiere.

The series follows the lives and loves of a group of gays and lesbians living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and is based on the highly praised miniseries of the same name that aired in Britain in 1998-99.

The cable network promoted "Queer as Folk" particularly heavily in predominantly gay areas. "Cable operators in San Francisco and Los Angeles ended up with jammed phone lines" last week as people tried to put in quick orders so they'd catch the premiere episode, said Jerry Offsay, Showtime Networks' president of programming.

Tom Green inks deal with MediaTrip.com

HOLLYWOOD, California -- Comedian Tom Green and fiancee Drew Barrymore may have faked getting hitched on "Saturday Night Live," but Green's newest partnership is the real deal.

Green recently signed a long-term agreement to partner his Web site, TomGreen.com, with MediaTrip.com.

Under the deal, Revolution Studios, which uses MediaTrip as the online outlet for its films and new projects, gets a first-look at all TomGreen.com projects that can be turned into films or TV shows.

Kirk Douglas to receive film festival prize

    Kirk Douglas

BERLIN, Germany -- Actor Kirk Douglas, who starred in such film classics as "Spartacus" (1960) and "Champion" (1949), will receive the honorary Golden Bear prize at next year's Berlin International Film Festival.

Organizers for the festival, which is scheduled for February, said the 83-year-old Douglas "embodies the quintessence of the pioneering spirit and typical American individualism."

Douglas has starred in 80 films, and was nominated three times for a best actor Oscar for his work in "Champion" "Lust for Life" (1956) and "The Bad and the Beautiful" (1952). He won an honorary Oscar in 1995, just months after suffering a stroke.
