'West Wing,' 'Sopranos' lead Emmy nominations

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The new hit NBC White House drama "The West Wing" and the HBO mob series "The Sopranos" led the field of prime-time Emmy Award contenders Thursday with 18 nominations each, including nods for best drama.

"West Wing," starring Martin Sheen as fictional U.S. President Bartlet, and "The Sopranos," which swept last year's Emmy nominations, were joined on the list of best-drama nominees by NBC hospital series "ER," and the legal dramas "The Practice" (ABC) and "Law & Order" (NBC).

1999 nominees:  Who was nominated last year? Who won?

Nominated as best comedy series were "Frasier" (NBC), "Friends" (NBC) "Sex and the City" (HBO), "Everybody Loves Raymond" (CBS) and "Will & Grace" (NBC).

Michael J. Fox, who left the NBC hit sitcom "Spin City" at the end of last season to battle Parkinson's disease, was nominated as best actor in a comedy series. The show is coming back for another season without him this fall.

NBC led the networks in nominations, snaring a total of 97, followed by the HBO cable network with 86. ABC, home of the ratings phenomenon "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire," which does not compete in the prime-time Emmys because it's a game show, was third with 64 nominations, CBS with 41 and Fox with 26.
