Stars shine on GOP fest

PHILADELPHIA (CNN) -- Republicans are trying to jazz up their image, and they're asked a pro wrestler, a couple of former Miss Americas, an assortment of singers and a handful of television and film stars to add some luster to next week's Republican National Convention.

"It's a different kind of convention because we have a different kind of candidate running for president," Andy Card, co-chairman of the GOP convention, said Friday.

Texas Gov. George W. Bush, who bills himself as a compassionate conservative, is anticipated to claim his party's nomination for president Thursday night after what's expected to be four days of political speeches, testimonials from ordinary citizens, entertainment, rallies and video tributes to past Republican presidents.

The convention kicks off Monday, and organizers have lined up a host of celebrities in an effort to entice more viewers to tune in.

The guest list is a glittering array of actors, sports and recording luminaries, and other celebrities. Film stars Bo Derek and Bruce Willis; former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Steve Young; singers Chaka Khan, Lee Greenwood and Jon Secada; and former Miss Americas Heather Whitestone and Nicole Johnson will be among the celebrities participating in the convention.

"We've got a unique celebrity lineup that will bridge generations and keep people on the edge of their seats, wondering what will happen next," Card said.

Different stars will have varying roles. Whitestone, for example, who is married to a politically active Republican, will introduce a video segment scheduled for Thursday about Laura Bush, the candidate's wife.

"The Rock," a World Wrestling Federation star, will open Wednesday evening's proceedings. He'll be followed by House Speaker Dennis Hastert, an Illinois Republican who just happens to be a former high school wrestling coach.

While conventions remain a highlight of the election cycle for pundits and politicians, fewer Americans watch them. Declining ratings -- and the lack of any real surprises at these carefully scripted events -- have prompted many TV networks to reduce live coverage of political conventions. Still, party activists believe that the summer conventions remain a good way for candidates to introduce themselves and their ideas to American voters. Card is one of them.

The GOP convention, he vowed, would be "historic and informative."
