UK shows dominate international Emmy nominations

LONDON, England (Reuters) -- Nominations for this year's International Emmy awards have been dominated by British shows -- with comedian Ali G leading the way.

Of the 21 television programmes competing for the awards, 12 were made in Britain.

Shellsuit-clad comic Ali G, whose real name is Sacha Baron Cohen, will be hoping to add to the television personality award he won in September.

Ali G has been widely applauded for his spoof hip-hop character in his programme "Da Ali G Show" on the UK's Channel Four network, and he recently starred in the video for Madonna's single "Music."

He faces competition from fellow British and Channel Four comedy programme "Smack the Pony" in the popular arts category at the awards.

Other British shows competing for prizes include the BBC's "Warriors" and Channel Four's "Longitude" in the drama category.

The International Emmy Awards, whose winners will be announced at a gala ceremony in New York on November 20, were created to honour television shows outside the United States.

Reuters contributed to this report.
