Lone Ranger memorabilia goes on sale

NEW YORK -- Hi-yo, Silver! The Lone Ranger rides again -- straight to the auction block.

Sotheby's auction house is currently holding an online auction of Lone Ranger memorabilia from the personal estate of Clayton Moore, the late actor who portrayed the masked hero on the 1950s TV series.

Fans and collectors have until November 2 to bid on more than 100 items on the Web site, sothebys.amazon.com.

Some of the featured items include the ranger's gun belt, his white Stetson cowboy hat and the whip Moore used during promotional appearances.

The item expected to fetch the highest bid is one of the three existing trademark masks worn by the Lone Ranger. Sotheby's estimates it will sell for between $40,000 and $60,000.

Moore snagged the role of the masked hero in 1949, when "The Lone Ranger" show moved from radio to TV. He played the Lone Ranger until 1951, taking a break for two years while sitting out a contract dispute with the show's producers. Moore resumed his role in 1954 and kept it until the show was cancelled in 1957.

Moore died in December 1999 of a heart attack. He was 85.
